Psychotherapy can help individuals identify areas where they are feeling stuck, learn new ways of coping with emotions and aid in processing difficult experiences. Often the therapeutic experience involves feeling frustrated when "old" coping styles are being challenged. My aim as a therapist is to help clients explore these places of frustration and to begin integrating new ways to relating to themselves, others and their worlds.
I take a collaborative approach with each client, trusting their experience and encouraging their direction in each session. My role is to serve as a frame of reflection while providing a balance of validation, challenge, direct feedback, and safety for my clients.
I approach each client with a sense of empathy, acceptance, and curiosity. My intention is to support my clients as they begin to integrate these compassionate ways of relating to themselves and different parts of their inner world.
Trauma impacts individuals perceptions of themselves, others and the world. My intention is to create safety for those with a trauma history, while actively taking steps to avoid inadvertently triggering or re-traumatizing the client in treatment.
The impact of prolonged sleep deprivation and prioritizing our baby's needs while dismissing our own can keep us stuck in the fight-flight response. When this goes unchecked, you may notice feelings of anxiety and depression, along with bursts of rage followed by shame and guilt. I support clients by helping them find ways to come out of the constant fight or flight response and to begin parenting from a place that is more integrated and grounded. Parenting is so often child-centred and my intention is to shift some of that attention and care onto the parents needs. The therapeutic work involves exploring what gets in the way of doing so.
My work often involves exploring early attachment relationships and working through potentially unmet needs or ruptures in attachment. These ruptures can often be mirrored or reflected in adult relationships, as an attempt to "repair" the wound. We seek out what is familiar to us because that is what feels safest. My aim is to support clients in recognizing the attachment wound often with integrating "inner child" work.
Online psychotherapy allows clients to access professional help from the comfort of their home. I understand this is not ideal for everyone and some clients may need the safety of a professional office space. For most clients, the flexibility in being able to access services from home allows for more scheduling options. Telehealth therapy sessions are confidential and the platform I use is HIPPA compliant.
